Years ago someone who should have accepted me for who I am wrote a letter in which they described me to a family member as “damaged”.
It is a word that has haunted me.
So today, on International Women’s Day and in collaboration with MIND, I am taking off the tape.
Because I am not damaged.
I am different.
I suffered from depression for years because I couldn’t understand why my mind doesn’t work like everyone else’s.
I had a breakdown at 17 because of the overwhelming pressure to be someone I wasn’t.
I have Aspergers & an IQ of 162.
I have a Masters Degree in Psychology (with honours) & 2 postgraduate qualifications.
I am an ex Samaritan.
I am a Mama, an Aunt, a Daughter, a Sister, a Niece, a Cousin, a Friend.
I am a woman.
I am me.
And I think that me is a pretty good person to be.
